Lucas Giolito Takes Hard-Luck No-Decision
4 years agoChicago White Sox starting pitcher Lucas Giolito was forced to take a no-decision Friday despite tossing a gem against the Tampa Bay Rays. Giolito allowed two runs on three hits and no walks while striking out eight over seven innings, but relief pitcher Aaron Bummer relinquished the lead in the eighth inning. Giolito has now posted five quality starts in his last seven outings, showing off how dominating he can be but also how frustrating, as in his other two starts he wasn't able to pitch past the fourth inning. Still, he registers as a very solid fantasy option with a 3.77 ERA, a 1.10 WHIP, and 169 strikeouts in 148 innings.

Lucas Giolito Will Begin Season On Injured List
2 weeks agoBoston Red Sox right-hander Lucas Giolito (hamstring) will begin the season on the injured list, according to manager Alex Cora. "We're going to be tested right away," Cora said. Giolito was pulled from his Grapefruit League start on Tuesday against the Philadelphia Phillies with what turned out to be a low-grade left-hamstring strain. It's not a serious injury, but it means the BoSox will now open the year without Giolito, Brayan Bello (shoulder) or Kutter Crawford (knee) in their rotation. With that trio of starting-pitcher injuries, both Quinn Priester and Richard Fitts appear likely to open the year in Boston's rotation. Giolito's fantasy value continues to drop after he missed all of the 2024 campaign due to a torn right UCL that required an internal-brace procedure. The good news is his new injury isn't arm-related, but he should still be avoided in 12-team mixed leagues.

Lucas Giolito Has Low-Grade Hamstring Strain
2 weeks agoBoston Red Sox starting pitcher Lucas Giolito (hamstring) has a low-grade hamstring strain. The right-hander suffered this injury during Tuesday's Grapefruit League contest. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status. Giolito said, "he feels good and his work will be based on how he feels." However, he is not sure if he can make his next start. Giolito was unable to pitch during the entire 2024 season after undergoing an internal brace procedure during last year's spring training. In 2023, Giolito logged 184 1/3 innings with a 4.88 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP. He tallied 204 punchouts and held a high 9.2 percent walk-rate. He also generated a modest 4.61 xERA with a low 36.1 percent ground-ball rate. If he were to miss time early in the season, fantasy managers should expect Cooper Criswell, Richard Fitts, and Quinn Priester to have increased opportunities.

Lucas Giolito Exits With Hamstring Tightness In Spring Debut
2 weeks agoBoston Red Sox right-hander Lucas Giolito (elbow, hamstring) left his Grapefruit League debut on Tuesday against the Philadelphia Phillies with left-hamstring tightness. It was Giolito's first game since tearing his right UCL last March and then requiring a season-ending internal-brace procedure. However, the Boston Herald's Mac Cerullo is reporting that Giolito thinks it's "very minor" and isn't concerned about it after he said he felt his hamstring tighten up on his first pitch. The 30-year-old stayed in to finish an inning of work in which he gave up two runs and one hit while walking two. It's not exactly the outing Giolito or the Red Sox were hoping for after he missed the entire 2024 campaign. It's uncertain if this will keep him from pitching the fifth game of the regular season against the Orioles, but the Red Sox can't afford any more injuries to their starters with both Brayan Bello (shoulder) and Kutter Crawford starting on the injured list. UPDATE: Manager Alex Cora said Giolito will get an MRI exam on Wednesday.

Lucas Giolito To Pitch Fifth Game Of The Year
2 weeks agoBoston Red Sox right-hander Lucas Giolito (elbow) is lined up to pitch the fifth game of the year in Baltimore against the division-rival Orioles on April 2, according to manager Alex Cora. Giolito is also set to make his Grapefruit League debut on Tuesday against the Philadelphia Phillies, which will be his first start since last March when he suffered a torn right UCL that required a season-ending internal-brace procedure. Currently ranked outside of RotoBaller's top-100 fantasy starting pitchers, Giolito has a lot to prove in his first season pitching for Boston. The 30-year-old veteran did have 204 strikeouts in 33 starts with the Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Angels and Cleveland Guardians in 2023, but he also had a 4.88 ERA, walked 73 hitters and allowed a league-high 41 home runs in 184 1/3 innings. Giolito will likely have restrictions after missing all of last year, making an even tougher bet for a bounce-back in fantasy.
