Latavius Murray was third on the team in carries behind
James Cook and
Damien Harris in the 38-10 blowout victory over the visiting Las Vegas Raiders in Week 2 on Sunday, but he did score his first touchdown of the 2023 season. Murray finished with six carries for 22 yards (3.7 yards per carry) and also caught both of his targets for nine yards. Murray finished with one more touch than Harris and played 23 percent of the offensive snaps compared to Harris' 18 percent. The 33-year-old veteran was often on the field with the Bills near the goal line, a trend that could continue the rest of the way. Murray won't have a consistent role in Buffalo's backfield as long as Cook is healthy, making him a touchdown-dependent RB4/flex in deeper fantasy leagues.

Damien Harris and
Latavius Murray have been competing at training camp in short-yardage situations. Murray remains the more accomplished and better receiver of the two backups to
James Cook, but Harris has consistently been the second back to get snaps after Cook throughout training camp. It will be interesting to see where the competition goes during the preseason, given that Murray is the more productive pass-catcher and has shown short-yardage ability. The Bills could go back and forth between Harris and Murray behind Cook, which will make it hard to endorse either back as an RB4/flex in fantasy drafts. If we had to pick, we'd favor the 26-year-old Harris.

Latavius Murray could be in a competition to see who the complementary rusher behind
James Cook will be in 2023. Both Harris ($1.4 million) and Murray ($802,500) received substantial guaranteed money from the Bills. Unless he suddenly takes to the offense this summer in training camp,
Nyheim Hines will likely be a kickoff and punt returner on special teams with some offensive snaps sprinkled in. Harris has had a tough time staying healthy in his career, so Murray could carve out a fantasy relevant role as a touchdown-dependent power back in Buffalo if Harris misses more time due to injury. If everyone is healthy, Cook will be the only startable RB for the Bills in fantasy lineups.

The Buffalo Bills signed free-agent running back
Latavius Murray to an undisclosed one-year deal on Monday. Murray will stay in the AFC in 2023 for his 10th NFL season after spending time with the New Orleans Saints and Denver Broncos last year. He joined Denver for 12 games in 2022 after playing in just one contest with the Saints. In his time in Denver, he had 160 carries for 703 yards and five touchdowns, adding 26 receptions for 124 yards. The 33-year-old had a decent 4.4 yards per carry for the Broncos, but in Buffalo he's unlikely to see many opportunities as running back depth behind
James Cook,
Damien Harris and
Nyheim Hines. Murray should be left to the waiver wire in most leagues to start the 2023 season.
