Kyle Larson Outdueled In The End
3 months agoAfter beating Bubba Wallace on the first green-flag pit cycle, Kyle Larson led the vast majority of Sunday's Southern 500 until his pit stop on the penultimate caution when Ross Chastain stayed out in a hail-mary attempt to make the playoffs. Although Larson restarted second, he ended up losing out when Chase Briscoe passed Larson, Ty Gibbs, and Chastain in one corner to ultimately take the win while Larson faded to fourth. This echoed Larson's 2018 Southern 500, where he led 284 laps and finished third, but Larson certainly ran better than Briscoe, even though he lost in the end. Amazingly, Larson led more laps on Sunday than his three Hendrick teammates have all season. Although Larson ended up losing the regular-season championship to Tyler Reddick by a point, that's almost irrelevant since Larson still accrued enough stage points to lead the playoff standings even without it.
