Kyle Gibson Named Rangers Opening Day Starter
4 years agoTexas Rangers starting pitcher Kyle Gibson was named the Opening Day starter on Tuesday, according to Rangers executive vice president of communication John Blake. Gibson struggled during the 2020 season, going 2-6 while posting his worst numbers since 2017 with a 5.35 ERA and 19.3 percent strikeout rate, while setting career-worsts with a 10 percent walk rate and 26.7 percent HR/FB rate. Gibson did not face the Royals last year, but in 2019 he made six appearances (four starts) against Kansas City, where he went 2-0 with a 4.03 ERA and a 20 percent strikeout rate over 22 1/3 innings. The Royals were middle-of-the-pack last year with a 24 percent strikeout rate. Given Gibson's struggles last year, his value will be very limited in his first start of 2021.
