4 years agoPhiladelphia Phillies starting pitcher Kyle Gibson allowed two runs across 6 2/3 innings to earn the win Sunday in Pittsburgh. Gibson allowed five hits and two walks while striking out five in his first game since being traded to Philadelphia from Texas. The veteran hurler earned 14 swinging strikes on 113 pitches which bodes well for his ability to pitch deep into games and earn wins for fantasy managers as a member of the Phillies. Gibson has had a nice bounce-back season thus far as his ERA is down to 2.86 after this start. He'll make his home debut on Friday against a tough Mets lineup.--Mike Schwarzenbach - RotoBaller

1 week agoFree-agent right-hander Kyle Gibson is throwing in simulated settings and still plans to pitch in 2025, MLB Network's Jon Morosi reports. Gibson ha reached 60 pitches over three innings while throwing live batting practice to college teams. The 37-year-old veteran has averaged around 180 innings per year over the last four seasons and could be worth a flier late this spring for a team that has questions surrounding their starting-pitching depth. He became a free agent when the St. Louis Cardinals declined his $12 million club option for the 2025 season back in October. Gibson has made 30-plus starts in each of the last three seasons but doesn't have much fantasy upside, as he's posted a 4.68 ERA and 1.33 WHIP with a below-average 20.1% strikeout rate and 7.6% walk rate in 529 1/3 innings. At best, Gibson would be a low-upside DFS streamer if he signs with a team and finds a starting role in 2025.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

5 months agoSt. Louis Cardinals starting pitchers Kyle Gibson and Lance Lynn had their club options declined and will be headed to free agency. Gibson logged 169 1/3 innings in his debut season in St. Louis with a 8-8 record, 4.24 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, and a 68:151 BB:K ratio. Lynn posted a 3.84 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP with a 7-4 record across 117 1/3 innings last season. Both remained in the starting rotation the entire season. In the same move, the Cardinals also declined the 2025 club option for pitcher Kenyan Middleton. Middleton logged only five innings in the minor leagues this season due to a forearm injury. This transaction allows the Cardinals to trim substantial payroll off of their pitching staff. Currently, the Cardinals rotation consists of Miles Mikolas, Erick Fedde, Sonny Gray, Andre Pallante, and Michael McGreevy.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller

9 months agoSt. Louis Cardinals right-hander Kyle Gibson (back) is listed as the team's probable starting pitcher on Tuesday versus the visiting Atlanta Braves. Gibson was scratched from his last scheduled outing on Wednesday against the Miami Marlins due to back tightness, but it appears the injury won't cause him to miss anymore time or put him on the injured list. Although the 36-year-old veteran has limited fantasy upside due to his 18.8% career strikeout rate, he's been trending up of late and hasn't allowed more than three earned runs in each of his last five starts. In three outings in June, he's allowed six earned runs on 15 hits while walking six and fanning 21 in 18 2/3 frames. Gibson will be a bit more risky for fantasy managers on Tuesday, but he'll also be facing a Braves team that is much less dangerous with no Ronald Acuna Jr.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

9 months agoSt. Louis Cardinals right-hander Kyle Gibson (back) said on Thursday morning that he's fine and half joked that he's going to try and talk his way into the game on Thursday night. Gibson was scratched from his scheduled start on Wednesday against the Miami Marlins due to back tightness, but it may not be serious enough to land him on the 15-day injured list. There's still a chance the Cardinals play it safe, though, and put the 36-year-old veteran on the IL. It's unclear when he'll be able to take the mound next. The former 22nd overall pick by the Minnesota Twins in 2009 out of Missouri has been decent in his first year in St. Louis in 2024, going 5-2 with a 3.44 ERA (4.14 FIP) and 1.19 WHIP with 73 strikeouts and 31 walks in 83 2/3 innings over 14 starts.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
