Jose Urquidy Starting On Monday
4 years agoHouston Astros starting pitcher Jose Urquidy (shoulder) will be on the bump for Monday's matchup against the Red Sox. Urquidy has been out of the lineup since May 12 due to shoulder inflammation and has made a few appearances with Double-A Corpus Christi. The 26-year-old has a 3.22 ERA this season but will have his hands full against a Boston club that has played well against right-handed pitching this year.

Tigers Sign Jose Urquidy To One-Year Deal
2 weeks agoThe Detroit Tigers signed free-agent right-hander Jose Urquidy (elbow) to a one-year, $1 million deal on Saturday that includes a $4 million club option for 2026, according to the Detroit Free Press' Evan Petzold. Urquidy underwent Tommy John surgery in June of last year. After signing him, the Tigers placed both Urquidy and right-hander Sawyer Gipson-Long (elbow, hip) on the 60-day injured list. The 29-year-old Urquidy won't be able to make his debut with Detroit until sometime in the second half of the season, but if the Tigers like what they see when he returns, they can pick up his option for next season. Depending on the state of Detroit's starting rotation, there's a good chance Urquidy returns in a relief role later this year. In his five years with the Houston Astros, Urquidy had a 3.98 ERA and 1.14 WHIP with a below-average 19.6% strikeout rate and 5.8% walk rate in 405 innings pitched.

Cristian Javier, Jose Urquidy Expected To Be Ready Next July
6 months agoHouston Astros general manager Dana Brown said on Thursday that right-handers Cristian Javier (elbow) and Jose Urquidy (elbow) are both projected to return at the end of July in 2025, "hopefully earlier." Javier and Urquidy both had Tommy John surgery in June of this year, so they will most likely miss all of the first half of next season as they recover. Javier is the more attractive fantasy option, but neither pitcher is going to be able to make any kind of impact until after the All-Star break, and even then, they'll both be risky coming of TJ surgery. The 27-year-old Javier only made seven starts for Houston in 2024, going 3-1 with a 3.89 ERA and 1.41 WHIP with 27 K's and 19 walks in 34 2/3 innings. Urquidy was unable to pitch at all in the big leagues in 2024, and he only appeared in 16 (10 starts) games in 2023 due to injuries as well.

Jose Urquidy To Have Season-Ending Surgery Wednesday
10 months agoHouston Astros right-hander Jose Urquidy (elbow) will undergo season-ending elbow surgery on Wednesday, the team announced. The Astros didn't specify the exact nature of Urquidy's surgery, but he will not pitch again in 2024. The exact nature of the surgery and a projected timetable for the 29-year-old's return should be more clear after the procedure is completed. It's more bad news for Houston's rotation after it was announced on Tuesday that right-hander Cristian Javier (elbow) is having Tommy John surgery on Thursday. Urquidy has already had TJ surgery once back in 2017, so the team could elect to have him undergo an internal-brace procedure, which should shorten his recovery timeline. Either way, fantasy managers won't have him for the rest of this year and probably for the first half of 2025.

Jose Urquidy Could Be Headed For Another Tommy John Surgery
10 months agoHouston Astros starting pitcher Jose Urquidy (forearm), who was recently pulled from his minor-league rehab start, will soon visit with Dr. Keith Meister in Dallas and could be headed for the second Tommy John surgery of his career, according to sources. Urquidy is having a second opinion on his injured right forearm after already consulting with a specialist after he was pulled from his rehab assignment with Triple-A Sugar Land late last month. The 29-year-old veteran was shut down in mid-March in spring training with a right-forearm strain and has yet to pitch at all in 2024 for Houston. Urquidy also missed a big chunk of time in 2023 and could be on his way to missing the entire 2024 campaign. The upside was very limited to begin with for Urquidy, and now it looks like he may not be back until around midseason in 2025.
