Miami Marlins catcher Jorge Alfaro (hamstring) was back in the starting lineup for Tuesday's game and managed to go 0-for-5 with three strikeouts in a game the Marlins won 14-6. Every other Marlins starter had at least one hit, and seven other Marlins scored at least one run. In fact, starting pitcher Pablo Lopez and relief pitcher John Curtiss had better at bats than Alfaro in this game. Alfaro also just straight up missed a ball on a play at the plate even though he plays the position called "catcher". The Marlins seem to be fielding a competitive team, but they have absolutely nothing at the catcher position and no prospects anywhere near ready either. It's something that will need to be addressed soon if the team plans to compete this season.--David A Marcillo - RotoBaller

Free-agent catcher Jorge Alfaro signed a minor-league deal with an invite to major-league spring training with the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday, according to sources. Alfaro signed a minor-league deal with the Chicago Cubs last year but was released during spring training. The 31-year-old veteran backstop didn't see action anywhere in the big leagues in 2024 but will head to spring training in 2025 as catching depth for the Brew Crew. The Colombian catcher last appeared in the majors in 2023 with the Colorado Rockies and Boston Red Sox and went 7-for-48 (.146) with a homer and four RBI in just 18 games played. If Alfaro doesn't get cut by Milwaukee this spring, he will likely open the year at Triple-A Nashville as minor-league depth. In parts of eight seasons in the majors with five different teams, Alfaro has a career .253/.302/.393 slash line with 48 homers and 198 RBI in 496 games played.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

Free-agent catcher Jorge Alfaro agreed with the Chicago Cubs on a minor-league deal on Wednesday, according to sources. The deal includes an invitation to spring training. Alfaro will join the Cubbies in 2024 after spending the 2023 campaign with the Colorado Rockies and Boston Red Sox. He only played in a total of 18 games (52 plate appearances) and went 7-for-48 (.146) with a home run and four RBI in the big leagues. The 30-year-old Colombian will represent minor-league catching depth in Chicago behind Yan Gomes and Miguel Amaya and will not be on the fantasy radar. Alfaro has a .253/.302/.393 career slash line with 48 home runs, 198 RBI and 18 stolen bases in eight major-league seasons with the Phillies, Marlins, Padres, Rockies and Red Sox.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

The Miami Marlins signed free-agent catcher Jorge Alfaro to a minor-league deal on Tuesday. He's expected to report to Triple-A Jacksonville this week. Alfaro has played in just 18 games at the big-league level with the Boston Red Sox and Colorado Rockies this year, going 7-for-48 (.146) with a home run, four doubles, four RBI and two runs scored. Most of his playing time has come at the Triple-A level. The 30-year-old Colombian backstop will now return to Miami after playing for the team from 2019-21. For now, Alfaro will represent catching depth at the minor-league level behind Nick Fortes and Jacob Stalling at the big-league level.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

The Boston Red Sox signed free-agent catcher Jorge Alfaro to an undisclosed major-league contract on Thursday, and he'll be active on Thursday night against the visiting Texas Rangers in Beantown. Alfaro joined the Colorado Rockies for 10 games after opting out of his minor-league deal with the Red Sox in June, but now he's back in Boston. The 30-year-old veteran backstop went 5-for-31 (.161) with a homer, four doubles and four RBI in his 10 contests with the Rockies. With Reese McGuire (oblique) currently injured, Alfaro will serve as Connor Wong's backup in his return to Boston. Alfaro isn't much of a fantasy option and won't see regular playing time. He's a career .245 hitter with 48 homers and 198 RBI in 1,690 plate appearances over eight seasons in the majors.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
