New York Yankees starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery was fantastic against the Orioles on Monday, tossing six shutout innings with no walks and seven strikeouts. Montgomery leaned heavily on his changeup on Monday (34% usage rate) with great success, generating nine whiffs on 25 pitches. Montgomery obviously won't stay this hot all season, but his season debut was encouraging and should have fantasy managers considering him on waivers (45% rostered).--Sam Chinitz

Arizona Sports' John Gambadoro reports that there has been recent interest from a few teams in trading for Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Jordan Montgomery. There could be even more interest from teams after Montgomery threw 2 2/3 scoreless innings in his Cactus League outing on Wednesday versus the division-rival Colorado Rockies. The New York Yankees come to mind as a team that might have serious interest in a reunion with Montgomery after injuries to Gerrit Cole (elbow), Luis Gil (lat) and Clarke Schmidt (shoulder). The 32-year-old southpaw is looking to bounce back after a rough first year in Arizona in 2024 in which he went 8-7 with a 6.23 ERA, 1.65 WHIP, 83 strikeouts and 44 walks in 117 innings over 25 outings (21 starts). If he earns one of the final rotation spots for the D-backs to start the season, his workload could be limited after missing the early portion of spring training with a finger strain.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery allowed two hits and five earned runs in his spring debut on Saturday. He was only able to tally one out before exiting the game. He served up two free passes and allowed a home run to Cincinnati Reds first baseman Christian Encarnacion-Strand. This was a disappointing showing for Montgomery as he is currently competing for a spot at the back of the Arizona rotation. During the early part of camp, the southpaw was dealing with a strained index finger which delayed his debut. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his progress during camp but it appears he will likely open the season in a long relief role. Last season, the 32-year-old posted a 6.23 ERA with a 1.65 WHIP in his Arizona debut. If he does open the campaign in a long relief role, he will only carry minimal value in NL-only formats.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller

Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Jordan Montgomery (finger) will pitch in a spring game on Friday, March 7, according to manager Torey Lovullo. Montgomery has missed the early portion of spring training due to a left index-finger strain, but it's good news that he's close to returning to game action, whether it be in a minor-league setting or in a Cactus League game against the Los Angeles Angels. Still, the 32-year-old veteran southpaw may not have enough time to get his arm built up in order to start the 2025 season in the Opening Day starting rotation for the D-backs. Given Monty's injury and his poor performance in 2024 in his first year in the desert, he should be avoided in 12-team mixed leagues. Never much of a strikeout artist, Montgomery's strikeout rate dropped from 21.4% to 15.6% last year while he also posted an ugly 6.23 ERA and 1.65 WHIP in 25 outings (21 starts).--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery (finger) is expected to throw his next bullpen session on Friday. The southpaw completed a session on Tuesday and will look to continue his recovery process later in the week. If this session goes well, the 32-year-old could be cleared to face hitters sometime next week. Montgomery was diagnosed with a strain on his left index finger earlier in February. He was sidelined from throwing for a few days but was quickly cleared for action. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status as he could be approaching his spring debut. Last summer, Montgomery had the worst season of his career as he held a high 6.23 ERA with a 1.65 WHIP across 117 innings. If Montgomery can return to form during camp, he could compete for one of the final spots in the starting rotation.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller
