Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic is reporting that San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Johnny Cueto is battling the flu and won’t throw a mound session Wednesday or Thursday. The Giants starting pitcher is coming off one of his worst seasons in which he dealt with multiple injuries, most notably blisters on his throwing hand. Cueto is a good bounce-back candidate entering 2018 and should return good value as a 10th-round pick.--Daniel Burdeen - RotoBaller

Texas Rangers veteran right-hander Johnny Cueto extended his opt-out date with the team until June 14, with a second opt-out coming on July 1, according to a source. Cueto is still hoping to be called up to Texas' big-league roster soon and has gone 1-0 with a 2.50 ERA and 1.11 WHIP with two walks and 15 strikeouts in 18 innings over just four starts in 2024 in the minors in the Arizona Complex League and for Triple-A Round Rock. The 38-year-old two-time All-Star made 13 appearances (10 starts) with the Miami Marlins in 2023 and went 1-4 with a career-worst 6.02 ERA and 1.26 WHIP with 15 walks and 39 punchouts in 52 1/3 innings pitched. If he makes it back to the big leagues in 2024 with either Texas or another team, Cueto will have very limited upside as a shaky matchup-based streaming option in AL-only leagues.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

The Texas Rangers have signed starting pitcher Johnny Cueto to a minor-league contract on Tuesday. The 38-year-old lands a deal with the defending World Series champions after a rough year with the Miami Marlins. Cueto posted a 6.02 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, and a 39/15 K/BB ratio over 52 1/3 innings with the Marlins last season. It's uncertain what Cueto still has left in the tank, but he'll at least be additional depth for the organization. Cueto has plenty of experience but is unlikely to offer any kind of fantasy value.--Andy Webb - RotoBaller

Miami Marlins right-hander Johnny Cueto wasn't very effective in a no-decision on Friday night in an eventual 9-6 win over the visiting Atlanta Braves. Cueto allowed three earned runs on seven hits (one homer) while walking none and striking out two in only four innings of work. The veteran 37-year-old Dominican hurler has only appeared in 10 games (nine starts) for the Fish in 2023 and hasn't been very good. And since he returned from the injured list on Sept. 2, he's given up 11 earned runs on 17 hits (four homers) while walking five and striking out only nine in 12 2/3 innings over three starts. Cueto has a 6.20 season ERA and 1.29 WHIP and has very little fantasy upside at this point in his career.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

Miami Marlins starting pitcher Johnny Cueto (illness) is expected to start on Saturday against the Washington Nationals. Cueto was placed on the 15-day injured list back on August 21 with a viral infection, and although he hasn't been officially activated yet, beat writer Jordan McPherson stated that the veteran hurler is starting on Saturday. It's been a poor season so far for the 37-year-old as he owns a lackluster 5.57 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, and 26:9 K/BB ratio over 32 1/3 innings (seven games, six appearances). His low WHIP and inflated ERA suggest he's had some bad luck so far but fantasy managers should avoid streaming him for this one. Miami is in the thick of the heated NL Wild Card race so any positive signs from Cueto would be big down the stretch.--Jon Mathisen - RotoBaller
