2 years agoToronto Maple Leafs center John Tavares scored his 11th career hat trick and his first in three years as the team picked apart Philadelphia 5-2 Wednesday night. Tavares put Toronto 2-1 up in the first period and grabbed a pair of late goals to lock up the victory. He struck once on the power play and also had one power-play assist in the contest. The Maple Leafs captain is rolling nicely at the start of the season, having finished pointless just twice, and going for seven goals and seven assists in 11 outings. Alex Ovechkin (28), Eric Staal (14), Evgeni Malkin (13), Connor McDavid (12), David Pastrnak (12) and Sidney Crosby (12) are the only active players with more hat tricks than Tavares.--Taavi Pailk - RotoBaller

1 month agoAccording to Mark Masters of TSN, Toronto Maple Leafs forwards John Tavares (lower body) and Matthew Knies (upper body) could return to the starting lineup on Saturday evening to face the Edmonton Oilers. Tavares has been sidelined over the past six games but has resumed skating this week, which is a positive sign. Knies has missed the last two contests and is trending towards a quick return. Before the injury, Tavares tallied four points over his previous six games. Across 44 total games, the 34-year-old has tallied 42 points. Knies was enjoying a nice offensive surge as he tallied 12 points, including seven goals in 10 games before his injury. Both forwards would be expected to return to the top six on Saturday night and would be viable options in DFS.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller

1 month agoToronto Maple Leafs center John Tavares (lower body) was back at practice on Friday. The veteran star has missed six games with a lower-body injury, but it looks like he might be ready to rejoin the action soon. Tavares worked in a regular jersey on Friday, which suggests that his comeback could be very close. The Maple Leafs will resume their season on Saturday against the Edmonton Oilers. Tavares is enjoying a strong season with the team, boasting 20 goals and 42 points through 44 appearances. Pontus Holmberg has served as the second-line center during Tavares' absence and is poised to drop into a bottom-six role once he's back.--Taavi Pailk - RotoBaller

2 months agoToronto Maple Leafs center John Tavares (lower body) was placed on Injured Reserve Thursday. The veteran star was hurt in Wednesday's practice and will be out for a significant stretch, with Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube announcing that Tavares is week-to-week. This is a tough blow for Toronto, which has lost three games in a row entering Thursday's contest against New Jersey. Tavares has been a point-per-game player for most of the campaign, notching 20 goals and 22 assists in 44 appearances. Berube will go with Max Domi as the second-line center on Thursday. Domi has disappointed fantasy managers in 2024-25 and is experiencing another barren spell, going scoreless in six of the past eight games.--Taavi Pailk - RotoBaller

2 months agoToronto Maple Leafs center John Tavares extended his point streak to eight games during their victory over the New York Islanders. Tavares got on the scoresheet on the final minutes with an empty-net goal on the power-play. During this eight-game stretch, the veteran has tallied 13 total points (seven goals, six helpers), with four of these points coming on the power-play. With Auston Matthews (upper body) on the injured reserve, Tavares has taken full control of the No.1 center role. Across 37 games this season, the 34-year-old has scored 38 points with eight of them coming on the man-advantage. Fantasy managers should expect Tavares to continue to produce point-per-game production, playing alongside William Nylander and Mitch Marner.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller
