2 years agoCincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto (shoulder) is expected to miss the first few games of Spring Training. Votto underwent surgery last August to repair his rotator cuff and bicep tears. The 39-year-old is ramping up his workload and hopes to return to the diamond soon. This season marks the final year of Votto's 10-year $225 million deal, but it has a club option worth $20 million for 2024. The veteran is coming off his worst offensive performance in his 16-year career after slashing .205/.319/.370 through 376 plate appearances. He reached a career-high 25.8% strikeout rate and mustered an 11.7% walk rate. Votto noted a significant improvement after ditching his "greedy" approach last season and hopes to make an impact when he returns to the Reds' lineup.--Rephael Negnewitzky
