Jhonathan Diaz Becomes A Free Agent
1 min agoSeattle Mariners left-hander Jhonathan Diaz cleared waivers on Friday and elected to become a free agent. In another move, outfielder Cade Marlowe cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma. Diaz was designated for assignment recently by Seattle to make room on the 40-man roster for pitcher Casey Legumina. The 28-year-old Venezuelan southpaw is now free to sign with any major-league team. In his first year with the Mariners in 2024, Diaz appeared in only five games (one start) at the big-league level and allowed six runs (five earned) on 14 hits (two home runs) while walking three and striking out eight in 9 2/3 innings. His first three years in the majors came with the Los Angeles Angels, where he went a combined 2-1 with a 4.84 ERA and 1.73 WHIP with 24 K's and 24 walks. Diaz will be left-handed relief depth if he latches on with another organization.
