6 years agoTexas Rangers relief pitcher Jeffrey Springs performed well in his debut in the "opener" role on Monday. Springs was making his first ever start in the majors, and his first at any level this season. The young left-handed pitcher had three strikeouts and gave up two hits in his two scoreless innings Monday. His success Monday means that we could see Springs performing this role for the Rangers again if the matchup is right. The opener role offers little fantasy value for that pitcher, but looking longer term, solid performances in this role will raise Spring's stock in the eyes of the Rangers and could lead to him getting a shot as the closer at some point further down the line--Ben Rolfe
