Washington Capitals defenseman Jakob Chychrun (illness) will return to action on Sunday against the Columbus Blue Jackets. He has missed two games due to illness and was initially regarded as a game-time decision. Chychrun may see increased usage on Sunday with John Carlson (rest) out of the lineup. The 27-year-old has enjoyed an impressive first year in Washington, registering a career-high 47 points (20 goals, 27 assists) in 72 games with a plus-19 rating. Alexander Alexeyev will make way for Chychrun in the lineup.

The Washington Capitals have signed defenseman Jakob Chychrun to an eight-year extension worth $72 million. This new contract begins during the 2025-2026 campaign. The Capitals acquired Chychrun from the Ottawa Senators during the offseason in exchange for Nick Jensen and a 2026 third-round selection. During his first season in Washington, Chychrun has been quite productive as he has scored 18 goals, which matches a career-high, and added 25 helpers, which is just two short of a career-high. Chychrun has also tallied 14 power-play points and added an impressive 47 hits and 79 blocked shots through 65 contests this season. This contract will keep Chychrun as a cornerstone on the Washington blue line for the foreseeable future. He is currently dealing with a wrist laceration and is questionable for Tuesday's contest against the Winnipeg Jets.

Washington Capitals defenseman Jakob Chychrun (hand) suffered a laceration from a skate on his hand during Saturday's contest. Head coach Spencer Carbery said he was "lucky," but it was still a "significant" cut. He will travel with the team to Winnipeg for Tuesday's contest but may not suit up. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status during Tuesday's morning skate, as it will likely provide clarity on his status. Over his last eight contests, Chychrun has tallied four points (one goal) with 23 shots on goal, seven hits, and six blocked shots. Through 65 contests this season, the 26-year-old has tallied 43 points, with 14 of them coming on the power play. If Chychrun were to sit out on Tuesday, Alexander Alexeyev would likely enter the starting lineup.
