Jake Newberry Gives Up More Home Runs
6 years agoKansas City Royals reliever Jake Newberry was called upon to put out the fire in the third inning of Wednesday's shellacking by the Astros, and he did escape a jam by only allowing a sacrifice fly. Unfortunately, Michael Brantley put one in the seats off him in the next inning, and that now makes three straight appearances where the reliever has given up a long ball. Newberry has allowed four home runs in his last 5 2/3 innings pitched, and that's brought his ERA up over 5.00. The worst news is that he's actually gotten lucky so far by stranding a whopping 90 percent of runners that he's inherited this year, so his FIP is actually over a run higher. With KC's bullpen in shambles, there are tons of opportunities for youngsters like Newberry to move into more important roles, but he's not going to have much of a future if he can't keep the ball in the yard.
