Jake McGee Keeps Trend Alive
5 years agoColorado Rockies relief pitcher Jake McGee doesn't seem like anything too special this season, but he's actually second in the league in a category. McGee tossed a shutout inning on Saturday, but like most of his innings this season, it wasn't the kind of dominant relief inning one would expect from a high-leverage reliever with an ERA of just 1.35. He didn't strike anyone out and allowed two baserunners. In fact, McGee is only striking out seven batters per nine innings, and his xFIP of 5.00 is horrific and implies a time bomb is waiting. That said, McGee's secret weapon is when batters don't hit home runs against him. McGee has a strand rate of 100% in 20 innings pitched this season. Only Yoan Lopez of the Diamondbacks still has a 100% strand rate with more innings pitched, and this rate is a big part of why McGee's xFIP is so high. League average is around 72% and his career rate is 75%, but the former closer doesn't seem to care this year. For fantasy purposes, his lack of strikeouts make him less than desirable, but his ability to buckle down when runners are on is an impressive trick.
