Jake Arrieta Intends To Pitch Opening Week
7 years agoAlthough he waited and waited into mid-March to sign with a new club, new Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Jake Arrieta vows to be ready for the beginning of the 2018 season. The 32-year-old says he’s been tossing bullpen sessions of up to 60 pitches while patiently waiting for a new contract, keeping himself in shape for the start of the season. With Aaron Nola already having been tabbed by manager Gabe Kapler as the Opening Day starter, Arrieta ideally fits in as the club’s No. 2 starting pitcher. Arrieta, who won the National League Cy Young award in 2015, spent the last four-plus seasons with the Cubs, helping them win a World Series in 2016. At his introductory press conference on Tuesday, he stated that the Phillies would compete this year after a disastrous 2017.
