Is Austin Dillon A Must Play On Superspeedways?
7 months agoOn Saturday afternoon, Austin Dillon qualified fifth for the Geico 500 at Talladega Superspeedway. Because of his two Cup wins and his nine top 10 finishes at Daytona, Dillon has earned a reputation for being a solid restrictor plate racer. Despite his impressive performances at The World Center of Racing, he has not had the same level of success at Talladega, despite the similarity between the tracks. In his 21 Cup starts in eastern Alabama, the Richard Childress Racing star has never won and has just five top-10 finishes. Although his average finish of 19.4 at Talladega isn't too far off his 17.4 average finish at Daytona, he has three more DNFs here, which shows he struggles to keep his car on this track. To this point, his eight DNFs at Talladega are the fifth most of any driver in the series, a stat that further puts his struggles into perspective. While Talladega is a track that you can count anyone out at, don't assume that Dillon's past success at Daytona means he is a strong play this weekend as he is not nearly as strong in Alabama as he is in Florida.
