Injuries Affecting Adam Wainwright's Velocity
2 years agoSt. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Adam Wainwright (back, finger) had a burn on his index finger and the skin gave way during his Grapefruit League start on Thursday. He has also been trying to get a muscle in his leg/lower back to engage after experiencing back spasms. The back issue has limited his leg drive and his velocity in camp. The 41-year-old veteran allowed three runs in three innings of work on Thursday against the Houston Astros. He topped out at only 86 mph. Wainwright is set to pitch for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic, but it's fair to wonder if he'll go through with that if he continues to have back issues. This isn't the best news for an aging pitcher that was already experiencing a dip in velocity and strikeout rate as he heads into his 18th and final MLB season.
