Hurston Waldrep K's 11 In Triple-A Debut
10 months agoMaking his Triple-A debut on Sunday, Atlanta Braves pitching prospect Hurston Waldrep was brilliant. Waldrep threw six frames and allowed five hits, three runs and one walk with 11 strikeouts. The former Florida Gator had his splitter on full display as he reached a new career-high for strikeouts. Between Double-A Mississippi and Triple-A Gwinnett, Waldrep is now 3-5 with a 3.09 ERA in 10 starts to go along with 59 strikeouts in 55 1/3 innings. It was an impressive display for the consensus Top-100 prospect that continues to knock down every wall in front of him. With the Braves still trying to figure out the end of their rotation, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Waldrep get an opportunity, should he continue to mow down hitters in Triple-A. Waldrep makes for a strong stash in redraft leagues for managers that have a spot and at the very least should be on watch lists with his potential to do major damage on a good team with the right opportunity.

Hurston Waldrep Bringing His Curveball Back
1 month agoThe Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Justin Toscano writes that Atlanta Braves pitching prospect Hurston Waldrep is working to bring his curveball back this spring. Waldrep, the team's first-round selection in 2023, has a fastball, elite splitter and a slider that he's developed, in addition to the curve that he's reintroducing in spring training. It should give the 22-year-old hurler another weapon to attack left-handed hitters with as he attempts to win a rotation spot with the Braves in 2025. Waldrep will likely start 2025 at Triple-A Gwinnett, but he could be one of the first arms back with the big-league club if injuries hit the starting rotation. He struggled in his first two big-league starts in 2024 before suffering an elbow injury that cost him six weeks. Waldrep's stuff is real and nasty, but he's going to need to improve his command to succeed at the next level.

Hurston Waldrep Shut Down For A Week
9 months agoAtlanta Braves rookie right-hander Hurston Waldrep's (elbow) evaluation showed that it was what the Braves believed it to be, just right-elbow inflammation. It seems to be the best-case scenario for the young pitcher. Waldrep will be shut down for a week and then will begin building his arm back up again. The 22-year-old prospect won't be ready to return from the 15-day injured when he's eligible, and when he is ready to come back, there's a good chance that he'll be sent back to Triple-A Gwinnett at that time. The club's No. 2 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, only made it through seven innings in his first two major-league starts against the Nationals and Rays and allowed 13 earned runs on nine hits (three homers) while walking eight and striking out only three. It seems more likely the Braves will send Waldrep back to the farm and use a different young arm for their big-league rotation.

Braves Put Hurston Waldrep On 15-Day Injured List
10 months agoThe Atlanta Braves placed right-handed pitching prospect Hurston Waldrep (elbow) on the 15-day injured list on Monday with right-elbow inflammation and recalled right-hander Daysbel Hernandez from the minors in a corresponding move. Outfielder J.P. Martinez was also optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett and outfielder Forrest Wall was recalled. Waldrep reported elbow soreness after his second major-league start on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Rays in which he allowed six earned runs on five hits (two homers) in just 3 1/3 innings of work. He allowed 13 earned runs on nine hits (three homers) while walking eight and striking out only three in seven innings in his first two starts and will most likely head back to Gwinnett for more seasoning once he's activated from the IL. Despite the rough start in the bigs, the team's No. 2 prospect per MLB Pipeline, should remain stashed in dynasty/keeper leagues.

Hurston Waldrep Making Major League Debut On Sunday
10 months agoAtlanta Braves starting pitching prospect Hurston Waldrep will be promoted and make his major league debut on Sunday against the Washington Nationals. As a result, Max Fried's scheduled start will get pushed back to Tuesday against the Baltimore Orioles. Waldrep was recently promoted to Triple-A on June 1 and only logged one outing at that level. In this start, he tossed six innings of three-run ball with eleven punchouts, five hits, and one free pass. The 22-year-old began the season with Double-A Mississippi and held a strong 2.292 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, and 17:48 BB:K ratio across 49 ⅓ innings. Waldrep is ranked as the 72nd overall prospect and 2nd in the Atlanta system on MLB Pipeline and is worth adding in all formats as he provides elite strikeout upside and he could remain in the starting rotation for the foreseeable future.
