Green Bay to Have Running Back by Committee
6 years agoAs reported by ESPN’s Rob Demovsky, Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said in an interview, “The fact of the matter is we’re going to go running back by committee.” Although it does seem odd to make such a pronouncement before training camp has even started, this should come as no surprise. Green Bay’s backfield consisting of Ty Montgomery, Jamaal Williams and Aaron Jones has no clear standout player. McCarthy further mentioned the durability concerns of all three players while explaining why it will be so important to utilize all three. When Green Bay has gone by committee in the past they have generally relied on only two running backs. It is not clear who the odd man out might be here. Additionally, it is also unclear if one of the backs may get a comparatively larger workload. Montgomery is likely the safest bet due to his size, experience and skills in the passing game, but he is no sure thing. McCarthy also left open the possibility that one of the three may establish themselves as Green Bay’s featured back as the year goes on. We likely will not see any clarity until we get closer to the opening game.
