St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Giovanny Gallegos pitched well on Tuesday, helping the Cardinals defeat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-2. Gallegos pitched two perfect innings, striking out three without allowing a base runner. The effort gave Gallegos his eighth hold of the season and lowered his ERA to 2.13. Gallegos has been solid all season and deserves a spot on all mixed league rosters in leagues where holds are valued. He's also next in line behind an injury prone (and huge regression candidate) closer Alex Reyes.--David A Marcillo - RotoBaller

The Minnesota Twins signed free-agent right-handed reliever Giovanny Gallegos to a minor-league deal on Tuesday after he was recently designated for assignment by the St. Louis Cardinals. The Twins will take a flier on Gallegos, who has 45 career saves in eight major-league seasons with the New York Yankees and St. Louis Cardinals. The 32-year-old Mexican reliever wasn't healthy earlier this year for the Cardinals, and his performance suffered, as he posted a career-worst 6.53 ERA (6.36 FIP), a 1.64 WHIP, one save, 21 strikeouts and 10 walks in 20 2/3 innings pitched in relief. It remains to be seen if Gallegos can turn things around to close out the year, or if he'll even get a shot at the big-league level with Minnesota, but he does have plenty of high-leverage experience and saved 38 games from 2021-23 in St. Louis.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Giovanny Gallegos has been designated for assignment by the organization. The right-hander has been a big part of the Cardinals bullpen over the last handful of years. However, Gallegos struggled heavily on the mound so far this season. He holds a 6.53 ERA, 1.65 WHIP, and 21/10 K/BB ratio across 21 appearances. The 32-year-old was removed from the 40-man roster to make room for Kyle Leahy. Gallegos has been bad, but he does have a solid track record. It wouldn't be shocking at all to see another team give him a chance.--Andy Webb - RotoBaller

The St. Louis Cardinals activated right-hander Giovanny Gallegos (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list on Friday and optioned right-hander Adam Kloffenstein to Triple-A Memphis in a corresponding move. Rookie outfielder Victor Scott II was also returned to Memphis after serving as the 27th player for Thursday's contest against the San Francisco Giants at Rickwood Field. The two teams are off on Friday before resuming the series on Saturday, at which point the 32-year-old Gallegos will be back in St. Louis' bullpen. He's been sidelined since early May due to a right-shoulder impingement. Gallegos has been a key late-inning man for the Cardinals in the past, but he wasn't pitching well before his injury and didn't look great on his minor-league rehab assignment, either. He's returning to a 12.00 ERA and 2.33 WHIP with 13 K's and a save in nine innings pitched this year.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Giovanny Gallegos (shoulder) is expected to be activated from the 15-day injured list at some point during this week's series in Miami against the Marlins, potentially as early as Monday. Gallegos has been sidelined since early May with a right-shoulder impingement and could be eased back into a high-leverage setup role in the Cardinals' bullpen given how much he had struggled early on before going on the shelf. The 32-year-old veteran right-hander also didn't look good on his minor-league rehab assignment, giving up eight runs while striking out five and walking four in 6 1/3 innings pitched. The Mexican reliever had a 12.00 ERA, 2.33 WHIP, 13 K's and seven walks in nine innings for St. Louis earlier this year. Gallegos can be useful in holds leagues, but fantasy managers probably aren't rushing to acquire him off the waiver wire.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
