Giovanny Gallegos Converts His Ninth Save On Tuesday
2 years agoSt. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Giovanny Gallegos closed out the team's 3-1 victory in Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He required 16 pitches to get through a scoreless ninth inning, allowing one hit and no walks along the way. He struck out one batter. This was his first converted save since May 20. Since that time, we've seen Ryan Helsley convert 4-of-5 save opportunities. Helsley was utilized in the eighth inning of Game 1 on Tuesday and struck out two of the three batters he faced while walking the other. He faced the toughest hitters in the Pirates lineup in the eighth inning while Gallegos dealt with the 5-through-8 hitters. It certainly seems as if Helsley is the favorite for saves going forward, but Gallegos may remain in the picture as well. Both players need to be rostered in leagues where saves are highly-coveted.
