9 months agoColorado Rockies manager Bud Black expects right-hander German Marquez (elbow) to make two more minor-league rehab starts with Double-A Hartford as he continues his recovery from Tommy John surgery. Marquez gave up four earned runs in just two-thirds of an inning while throwing 33 pitches in his last rehab start on Friday for Triple-A Albuquerque. After that outing, the 29-year-old will now need two more starts in the minors to build his pitch count up before the Rockies are comfortable adding him to their starting rotation for the second half of the season. Marquez started his rehab assignment on June 12 and has allowed a total of eight earned runs while striking out 13 and walking three in 8 2/3 innings. Fantasy managers will want to temper expectations when he returns to the majors, but Marquez could have some deep-league streaming appeal.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

8 months agoColorado Rockies right-hander German Marquez (elbow) has been shut down for the rest of the 2024 season after being diagnosed with a stress reaction in his right elbow. However, the good news is that there is no damage to the ligaments in his right arm. Marquez should be ready to throw in six to eight weeks, according to manager Bud Black, and will have a full offseason. The 29-year-old Venezuelan hurler worked his way back from Tommy John surgery last year but was only able to make one start in 2024 before being shut down with more elbow issues. In his lone start on July 14 against the New York Mets, Marquez gave up three earned runs while walking four and fanning three in four innings. Barring further setbacks this offseason, Marquez should be ready for spring training in 2025, but fantasy managers in mixed leagues can ignore him.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

8 months agoColorado Rockies starting pitcher German Marquez (elbow) has thrown two bullpen sessions since returning to the injured list in late July. Marquez returned to the bump on July 14 after his long recovery from Tommy John but, unfortunately, was diagnosed with elbow inflammation. Manager Bud Black expressed that the 29-year-old will need to log one more successful bullpen session before embarking on a rehab assignment. Marquez has been limited by several injuries over the past two seasons but hopes to return to a full-time role hopefully before the end of the month. Marquez could be worth stashing in deeper leagues as he should have a secure spot in the rotation once he returns.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller

8 months agoColorado Rockies starting pitcher German Marquez (elbow) has been placed on the 15-day injured list with right-elbow inflammation, retroactive to July 19. The right-hander is working his way back from Tommy John surgery, so Marquez having a setback shouldn't be shocking. He made one start since coming off the injured list. He pitched against the New York Mets ahead of the All-Star break. Marquez will now be sidelined for at least another two weeks. In a corresponding move, right-hander Noah Davis has been recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque. Davis hasn't offered much upside to the Rockies pitching staff over the last few seasons. Fantasy managers can ignore Davis going forward.--Andy Webb - RotoBaller

9 months agoColorado Rockies right-hander German Marquez (elbow) threw a bullpen session at Citi Field on Friday and is officially scheduled to start on Sunday in the series finale against the New York Mets in what will be his 2024 debut after recovering from Tommy John surgery. Marquez has been on a minor-league rehab assignment and hasn't pitched in the majors since April 26 of last year, so fantasy managers should temper expectations for him as he's eased back into the big leagues. He's expected to throw 75 to 90 pitches on Sunday. Marquez has won at least 11 games four times and is 65-56 with a 4.41 ERA in eight major-league seasons, all with the Rockies. The 29-year-old had a 6.23 ERA and 1.50 WHIP with a 23:4 K:BB in 17 1/3 rehab innings. Fantasy managers in mixed leagues can probably take a wait-and-see approach with Marquez as he works his way back into Colorado's rotation.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
