German Marquez 2019 Outlook: The Pitcher Who Can Deal With Coors
6 years agoOften a mantra for fantasy owners is to stay away from pitchers in Colorado, but Marquez makes an exciting case to change that narrative, and reward owners who jump in. Over 197 strong innings in 2018, Marquez posted an ERA of 3.77, and the FIP sat even lower at 3.40. The calling card is the stuff, with 10.56 K/9, and this helps Marquez suffer through the increased offensive context that is Coors Field. Also, the stuff allows Marquez to mitigate a plus .300 BABIP, again in some parts due to the field conditions, as he can still be an effective pitcher with runners on base. The key for 2019 will be to keep the FB% as low as possible. In a 2017 campaign that offered some issues for Marquez, that number was 33.1%. In a breakout 2018 campaign, that dropped to 29.8%. If this continues, and the Ks are still there, a good Rockies team will give owners wins, and makes Marquez a must-buy. Rotoballer has him ranked as the 26th best starter, but owners might have to pick him earlier with an average ADP at 77. Owners should be willing to buy at that price, as 2018 could be his floor as opposed to the ceiling with a bit more development and sustained improvement.
