Geno Smith Widens The Gap For Backup Job
6 years agoLast week, Los Angeles Chargers backup quarterback Geno Smith took advantage of the team's first preseason game to establish that he was more polished than competitor Cardale Jones. In Week 2 of the preseason, Smith widened that gap. Smith went 6-for-8 for 85 yards including a beautiful jump-ball touchdown to wide receiver Mike Williams while Jones only threw four passes and took a pair of ugly sacks. Smith is the odds-on favorite to win the backup job, and with the Chargers making the rounds as a popular Super Bowl pick, it could be an extremely valuable job if starting quarterback Philip Rivers were to ever go down.
