Franchy Cordero Continues Climbing Development Ladder
7 years agoAfter debuting at 22 years old and logging 99 plate appearances in 2017, San Diego Padres outfield prospect Franchy Cordero spent his MLB offseason in the Dominican Winter League and won both Rookie of the Year and MVP awards, finishing in the top five in average, on-base percentage, slugging, OPS, home runs, RBI and runs. Cordero showed his greenness last season with a 44.4 percent strikeout rate and .228 average despite a .400 BABIP. At Triple-A in 2017, Cordero boasted a .972 OPS and 15 stolen bases. His combination of excellent defense, speed and developing power makes him the Padres No. 12 prospect. Cordero enters spring training with the big league club amidst a competitive outfield situation. If Cordero can carry his winter ball momentum through March, he could find himself a spot on the roster. Cordero should be avoided for fantasy drafts, but managers should keep an eye on him for speed if he makes the team and improves his plate discipline.
