Former Top Prospect Jorge Mateo Headed To San Diego
4 years agoAccording to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the San Diego Padres have acquired shortstop prospect Jorge Mateo from the Oakland Athletics for a player to be named later. Logjammed in the Bay Area, the A’s No. 7 prospect was out of options and will now test his fate in San Diego. The 25-year-old possesses game-breaking speed, swiping 283 bags in eight minor league seasons. While he’s dealt with consistency issues, Mateo popped 19 homers and posted an .834 OPS last season in Triple-A Las Vegas’ launchpad. With star Fernando Tatis Jr. monopolizing shortstop, Mateo has a great opportunity if he can transition to second base, the Friars weakest position. To make the 30-man roster, Mateo will probably compete with infielders Ty France and Jake Cronenworth for a utility spot. Mateo’s uncertain role will deny him redraft fantasy value, but dynasty shareholders can be more optimistic about his near-term path to big league action.
