Fernando Rodney Trying To Make A Comeback
10 months agoLong-time major-league closer Fernando Rodney, who will turn 47 years old in two months, is attempting a comeback. He had 327 career saves, earned three All-Star selections, and won a World Series ring, but Rodney still has dreams of stepping back on a big-league mound. "I'm trying to get to 50," Rodney said flatly, before bellowing out a laugh. "That's my guess right now. I still touch 95, 94, 93, 92 when I want. I think there can be three more years." He last pitched for the World Series-champion Washington Nationals in 2019. Then 42, Rodney had a 4.05 ERA and two saves while averaging 93.8 mph on his fastball over 33 1/3 innings. He's currently 18th on the all-time list for most saves, two shy of Francisco Cordero's 329 saves. Cordero is also from the Dominican Republic and is the nation's saves leader. It would be fun to see Rodney and his crooked baseball cap in the bigs, but it's probably a long shot.
