Van Rooyen has yet to post a score better than the field average or finish within five shots of the leader in any of his previous three appearances. Over his last six rounds played, Van Rooyen has delivered one of the day's best scores in only one of those rounds, however, he has finished within three strokes of the best score of the round. Van Rooyen's last three appearances and finishes include RBC Heritage (missed cut), Valero Texas Open (missed cut), and Corales Puntacana Championship, where he finished 56th at two-under relative to par.
