7 months agoErik Jones used to be regarded for many years as one of the best superspeedway drivers, but this seems to have faded in recent years. Although he did lead often in drafting races in the first year with the Next Gen chassis in 2022, he has seldom contended at those tracks or anywhere else since Legacy Motor Club switched from Chevrolet to Toyota. He still tends to consistently earn top 20 finishes on superspeedways but rarely contends for top tens and he has not seemed to get his drafting mojo back since he was injured in a crash at Talladega. Although the Toyotas have been faster in drafting races than in qualifying, Jones is starting 33rd and the Legacy cars don't have the speed or resources of the Joe Gibbs Racing or 23XI Racing cars, so despite Jones's historical drafting prowess, it's hard to imagine him seriously contending.--Sean Wrona - RotoBaller

1 week agoErik Jones of Legacy Motor Club will start 28th for this week's race at Homestead-Miami Speedway, the Straight Talk Wireless 400. This starting position will be tied for the lowest of his Cup career at Homestead, along with his October 2024 appearance at the Miami track. In eight Homestead races, Jones has two top-20 finishes and obtained positive Place Differential three times, including his last two Cup events at the site. Through five races so far in 2025, Jones has had two top-20 finishes and only collected positive PD once. In practice for this week's race, Jones ranked eighth in overall lap averages while displaying top-20 speeds in the five through 15 consecutive lap average categories. The starting position for Jones provides plenty of potential upside and for his cheap salary ($6,100 on DraftKings), he is worth consideration as a driver who will compete for a top-20 finish.--Sean Engel - RotoBaller

2 weeks agoErik Jones of Legacy Motor Club acquired a starting position of fifth for this week's Cup race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, the Pennzoil 400. This is the first time that Jones will start inside the top 10 at Las Vegas since he earned his last pole at the site in 2018. In 15 races at Vegas, Jones has four top-10 finishes, with only one of them being scored since 2022. After four races so far this year, Jones has two top-20 finishes and a best finish of 12th at Daytona. In practice, Jones ranked 13th in overall lap averages and displayed top-10 speeds in the 10, 15, and 20 consecutive lap average categories. Although Jones has a cheap salary ($6,300 on DraftKings) and relatively solid practice speeds, his Vegas track history and low upside make him difficult to recommend for DFS outside of the occasional tournament lineup.--Sean Engel - RotoBaller

3 weeks agoConsidering Erik Jones has been one of the weakest qualifiers in the NASCAR Cup Series in recent years, the fact that Jones qualified fifth for Sunday's race at Phoenix may come as a surprise. However, he has qualified in the top 10 nine times here, including thrice with Legacy Motor Club. But after being dropped from Joe Gibbs Racing, he has never come close to contending here as his best finish in the No. 43 car has been 14th, although he did have a 10th-place average running position in the 2023 finale. It's possible that his cars are faster since Ben Beshore became his crew chief or he is faster since he has healed from last year's injury, but since he qualified fourth last year and ran poorly, you shouldn't count on him, and Legacy's recent history suggests he won't finish well.--Sean Wrona - RotoBaller

4 weeks agoErik Jones of Legacy Motor Club obtained a starting position of 32nd after qualifying for this week's Echopark Texas Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas. This will mark the third time in his Cup career that Jones will start 30th or lower at COTA. In four races at COTA, the No. 43 Toyota driver has two top-20 finishes and three finishes with positive place differential. In 15 starts at road courses outside of Chicago, Jones has five top-20 finishes. In final practice, Jones ranked 35th of all drivers in overall lap averages. Despite his slow practice speeds and road course inconsistency, COTA is a decent track for the driver of the No. 43 Toyota, and he has plenty of potential upside. Jones' history at road courses does not make him a primary play, but he can be worth consideration for cash games in DFS based on his low salary ($5,300) and upside.--Sean Engel - RotoBaller
