Emilio Pagan Headed To San Diego
5 years agoThe San Diego Padres acquired relief pitcher Emilio Pagan from the Tampa Bay Rays on February 8. The Rays receive outfielder Manuel Margot and prospect catcher Logan Driscoll in the exchange. Pagan crushed the competition in 2019 with 20 saves, a 2.31 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 36 percent strikeout rate across 66 appearances. The 28-year-old instantly slots in as the primary setup man for closer Kirby Yates. Pagan was the perceived closer in Tampa prior to the trade and his fantasy value will be impaired unless the Friars utilize a closer-by-committee approach, something that didn’t happen last year. Pagan’s new role also negatively impacts Andres Munoz, now third in line for saves, along with prospects Michel Baez and Adrian Morejon, whose roles with the Friars become further clouded.
