Edwin Diaz Nails Down 53rd Save
6 years agoSeattle Mariners closer Edwin Diaz picked up his 53rd save of the season in the Mariners 5-2 win over the Orioles. Diaz struck out two batters in the scoreless frame and now has 117 strikeouts in only 67 1/3 innings pitched. The dynamic closer already has appeared in 67 games this season so the worry that Diaz will run out of gas this season is a legitimate concern. But he continues to dazzle every time he gets on the mound and now has an ERA of 1.87 ERA and 0.77 WHIP. He is now tied for the fifth most single-season saves in major league history and trails the all-time leader Francisco Rodriguez by only nine saves. With 22 games to go, Diaz has an outside chance at the record.
