2 years agoPhiladelphia Phillies shortstop Edmundo Sosa is in the team's starting lineup on Wednesday for the second game of the National League Championship Series against the San Diego Padres and left-hander Blake Snell. Sosa hit .227 during the regular season with a .275 on-base percentage, a pair of home runs, and six stolen bases in 190 plate appearances. So far this postseason he's collected a double and a walk in four plate appearances. He'll hit ninth against Snell and the Padres.--Ben Rosener - RotoBaller

1 month agoPhiladelphia Phillies infielder Edmundo Sosa will be tried out in left field during spring training, and "there's a chance" he could also play center field, according to manager Rob Thomson. If Sosa looks good in center, it would give the Phillies another right-handed platoon option against left-handers other than Johan Rojas. "He'd become kind of a super-utility guy which would be a nice thing to have," Thomson said. "Until he gets out shagging and real reads off the bat, you really can't tell." Sosa played only two innings in center in 2023 and three innings in left field in 2022, so he has very little experience in the outfield. However, it will give Philly more options to get the 28-year-old's bat into the lineup if he's hot. He's still not much of a fantasy asset in mixed leagues with limited playing time, but Sosa getting reps in center field is bad news for Rojas.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

3 months agoInfielder Edmundo Sosa and the Philadelphia Phillies settled on a one-year, $3.0 million deal on Thursday to avoid salary arbitration, according to a source. Sosa will return to the Phillies in 2025 once again as utility infield depth for one of the strongest rosters in baseball. It means the 28-year-old will mainly be an option for fantasy managers in NL-only formats. The 28-year-old hit .257/.313/.422 with a .734 OPS, seven home runs, 31 RBI, a career-high seven stolen bases and 39 runs scored in 90 games played in 2024 in his second year in Philadelphia. At best, he's a league-average hitter as a utility infielder. Sosa is most valuable in real life as insurance at third base, second base and shortstop for the Phils. He has a modest power and speed profile but strikes out frequently due to poor plate discipline. His multi-position eligibility makes him more attractive as a reserve in deeper fantasy leagues.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

6 months agoPhiladelphia Phillies outfielder Johan Rojas and infielder Edmundo Sosa will both start on the bench for the Phillies in Game 4 of the National League Division Series on Wednesday at Citi Field against the division-rival New York Mets. Brandon Marsh is starting in center field and will hit ninth, while Bryson Stott will return to second-base duties and hit seventh against Mets left-hander Jose Quintana. Marsh and Stott won't be all that attractive in DFS lineups on Wednesday in the lefty-on-lefty matchup. Marsh has gone 0-for-2 with a strikeout in his career against Quintana, with Stott going 0-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout. Rojas started the first three games of the series in center field but had just one hit. The Phillies sat both Marsh and Stott in Game 3 against a lefty, but they're opting for more offense in this one in a must-win game to keep the series alive and sent it back to Philly for a Game 5.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

8 months agoPhiladelphia Phillies infielder Edmundo Sosa put together a good all-around performance in Tuesday's victory versus the Los Angeles Dodgers. Sosa went 2-for-4 with a run, home run and stolen base in a big night for the infielder. Sosa has had a solid season with a .274 batting average to go along with six homers, 25 RBI and six stolen bases this season, but Tuesday's start was his first since July 31 and he has not been getting enough opportunity to help fantasy managers. If an injury were to occur in the Phillies infield, Sosa's versatility would likely give him more at-bats. As it stands, Sosa can be left on the waiver wire.--Daniel Burdeen - RotoBaller
