Drew Smyly Takes Perfect Game Into The Eighth On Friday
2 years agoChicago Cubs left-hander Drew Smyly turned in an excellent outing in a 13-0 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday. Smyly took a perfect game into the eighth inning and wound up tossing 7 2/3 innings of shutout ball while striking out 10. The veteran southpaw ran into some bad luck in the eighth when David Peralta sent a slow roller down the third-base line. Smyly came off of the mound to make the play but catcher Yan Gomes was also in pursuit and wound up jumping onto the pitcher's back to avoid a collision. Peralta was safe at first and Smyly was replaced by Jeremiah Estrada two batters later. Despite losing the bid for a perfect game, Smyly still got the win, improving his record to 2-1, to go along with a 3.13 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, and 23 strikeouts in as many innings. He is scheduled to face the San Diego Padres on Wednesday for his next start.
