Derek Hill Signs Minors Pact With Rangers
1 year agoFree-agent outfielder Derek Hill has signed a minor-league deal with the Texas Rangers. The former first-round pick of the Detroit Tigers hasn't been able to maintain a job at the MLB level, as he has just 108 big-league games under his belt. In that time, he has hit .229 with four home runs and 10 stolen bases across 304 trips to the plate. Most recently, he played 13 games for the Washington Nationals in the 2023 season but struggled to a .170 average without a home run and with one steal across 50 trips to the plate. In all likelihood, the 27-year-old will serve as outfield depth at Triple-A for the Rangers in the 2024 campaign.

Derek Hill Homers Twice
7 months agoMiami Marlins outfielder Derek Hill had a nice game on Thursday, going 3-for-6 with a pair of homers in a 12-8 victory over the Colorado Rockies. Hill tacked on a pair of runs and three RBI to round out his line. The 28-year-old has found a place in the everyday lineup for the Marlins since being acquired by them at the trade deadline, and he's at least been able to provide some power and speed. He has four homers and three steals on the month, but his batting average has remained low. He isn't a terrible deep-league option for those in need of some power or speed, but he doesn't have much appeal outside of that.

Derek Hill Bashes Pair Of Homers
9 months agoTexas Rangers outfielder Derek Hill had a huge game on Sunday Night Baseball, going 2-for-4 with two homers and three RBI in an 11-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles. Hill smacked his first longball in the second inning, then went back for more in the fifth. The 28-year-old journeyman has had two monster seasons in the minors, especially this year where he is slashing .350/.415/.631 with 35 runs, eight homers, 17 RBI, and seven steals in just 176 plate appearances. While he has basically no major league track record and is likely only in the majors until Evan Carter returns, he could end up getting decent playing time as long as he keeps hitting. He is someone to keep an eye on in deeper leagues.

Derek Hill Making Season Debut Wednesday
2 years agoWashington Nationals outfielder Derek Hill is playing his first big-league game of the season Wednesday as he takes on the St. Louis Cardinals and right-hander Miles Mikolas. A 2014 first-round pick of the Tigers, Hill has been unable to put it together at the MLB level with a .240 average alongside four homers, nine steals, and a .630 OPS across just 254 trips to the plate for his career. However, Hill is raking at Triple-A this season with a .324 BA, eight HR, 10 SB, and a .914 OPS across 204 plate appearances. Known more for his glove, it will be interesting to see if Hill's renewed power/speed combination can translate into the big leagues at age 27.

Nationals Sign Derek Hill
2 years agoThe Washington Nationals signed outfielder Derek Hill to a minor league deal on Tuesday that includes an invite to spring training, according to a source. Hill is a former first-round pick by the Detroit Tigers. He finished last season with the Seattle Mariners after they claimed him off waivers in August. The 26-year-old appeared in 31 games for Detroit in 2022, hitting .229/.270/.289 with one home run, three RBI, eight runs scored and three stolen bases in 92 plate appearances. Hill hasn't been able to get his bat going in three major-league seasons, but he's excellent defensively and will give the rebuilding Nationals some more outfield depth heading into the 2023 season. He's hit just .240/.291/.339 with four long balls, 17 RBI, 30 runs scored and nine steals in 95 games over three seasons with Detroit.
