Denard Span Comes Through Off The Bench on April 3
7 years agoTampa Bay Rays outfielder Denard Span came in off the bench to deliver a two-run double Tuesday versus the Yankees. The hit would tie the game at 4-4 and get starting pitcher Chris Archer off the hook for a decision. This was the first meaningful offensive contribution since Span's opening day game-winner. Span does come with some positives. The reports say he will hit leadoff on occasion. Span is coming off a 2017 season where he batted .272 with 12 home runs and 12 steals. He rarely strikes out, having not topped 79 strikeouts in a season over the past eight seasons. As long as he gets to 450 plate appearances, he should serve as a steady and safe fourth or fifth outfielder in a 12-team mixed league. The troubling concern is that he has now been held out of the lineup twice in the first five games of the season. The question that we need to figure out is whether he will get enough playing time. For now, keep him in deeper leagues but monitor his playing time for the next week or two.
