Dellin Betances Unimpressive In Mets Debut
5 years agoNew York Mets relief pitcher Dellin Betances (shoulder, Achilles) made his Grapefruit League and Mets debut on Saturday with unimpressive results. In 1/3 inning pitched, Betances threw 24 pitches, struck out one batter, walked two, and gave up a two-run single. Most worrisome, however, was the fact that Betances' fastball topped out at 90 mph. Betances appeared in only one game last season for the Yankees due to a shoulder injury and subsequent Achilles tear. If Betances is ready for the start of the 2020 season, Betances will likely serve as the setup man in front of closer Edwin Diaz. He will have value in holds leagues and for strikeout upside if his health is not a concern. If healthy and ready to pitch in meaningful games, Betances is likely to be first in line for save chances in the event Diaz falters during the season.
