David Peterson Fails To Last Two Innings On Friday
4 years agoNew York Mets starting pitcher David Peterson lasted just one and 1/3 inning pitched on Friday in the Mets' 5-4 ten inning win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Peterson, who put up three strong starts over his last four outings, completely lost the strike zone in the second inning of Friday's contest. He hit a batter and walked two with the bases loaded, allowing three runs to score before he was removed. Overall, in his 1 1/3 IP, Peterson allowed three earned runs on three walks and three hits, while also striking out three batters. Friday's performance was not what fantasy managers or the Mets, who had two bullpen games on the road this past week against the Cardinals, needed to see. Peterson now owns a 5.54 ERA, a 1.38 WHIP, and a 32:11 K:BB in 26 IP on the season. Notably, Peterson is getting hit hard, yielding an average exit velocity of 89.9 mph and 10.4% barrel rate (both in the bottom third of MLB) and a maximum exit velocity of 116.3 mph which is in the bottom 3% of the league. Only his strikeout rate of 28.6% stands out as a positive advanced metric. As such, it has been a very inconsistent beginning to the season for Peterson. This makes him, at least at this point, nothing more than a dart-throw fantasy streaming option. Peterson is scheduled to next face the Tampa Bay Rays on the road on Friday in what could be a difficult matchup. Managers in shallow fantasy formats may wish to keep Peterson inactive for the time being and wait to see if he can string together a few solid starts before deploying him.
