Boston Bruins forward David Backes has been suspended by the NHL Department of Player Safety for three games for interference on Detroit Red Wings forward Fran Nielsen. The incident occurred at the end of the first period during the match between the two teams on Tuesday night, as Backes appeared to attempt a high hit on Nielsen, who had already moved the puck at least a half second before the collision took place. Nielsen was injured on the play, and Backes in turn received a roughing penalty for the hit. The 33-year-old veteran will be ineligible to play for the Bruins again until Tuesday, March 13, when Boston will face the Carolina Hurricanes. Backes has 27 points and 34 penalty minutes in 47 games played this season, although only managing to post one goal and one assist in the last nine games. The Bruins are already down one center with Patrice Bergeron out with a foot injury, so look for the team to give one of the minor league forwards a chance during Backes’ absence.--Alex McKenzie
