Daniel Suarez Needs Good Points Day at Watkins Glen
1 year agoDaniel Suarez has two possible paths to the Playoffs over the next two races: win and get in, or try and make it in on points. If he's going to accomplish the latter, though, he will need to overtake Bubba Wallace in the points standings over the next two races by earning at least 29 more points than him (and hoping their isn't a unique winner over the next two events). We saw Suarez gain a lot of ground in the points standings at Indy Road Course last weekend, and with Sonoma also being a road course--and Bubba Wallace historically struggling at this track type--it's definitely possible for Suarez to gain more ground. When asked about the Playoffs scenario earlier this week, Daniel replied, "We just need to keep doing what we are doing, That's qualify well and earn stage points and get a good finish. There is still a lot of racing left and we know we can do this." Although Suarez isn't as fast this weekend as he was last week, the No. 99 Chevrolet still has decent speed, with Daniel qualifying in 14th-place for Sunday's race. Wallace (surprisingly) qualified two places better. At Watkins Glen last season, Suarez came away with a 5th-place finish. He should be able to contend for a top-10 result this weekend.
