Cubs Trade For Martin Maldonado
5 years agoThe Chicago Cubs acquired catcher Martin Maldonado from the Kansas City Royals on Monday in exchange for pitcher Mike Montgomery. With Willson Contreras going on the injured list for Chicago, the Cubs wanted another backstop. He should share time with Victor Caratini as long as Contreras is on the shelf. Maldonado has struggled in his time with KC, hitting only .224/.288/.359 with six homers, 26 runs and 17 RBI in 237 at-bats on the season. His fantasy value may rise some in the short term, but not even to really consider him outside of deep two-catcher leagues. Montgomery, a lefty, has experience as a swingman. Even if he's making starts for the lowly Royals, he won't be much of a fantasy option.
