Craig Kimbrel Closes Out Friday's Win
2 years agoPhiladelphia Phillies right-hander Craig Kimbrel notched his first save of the season on Friday when he closed out the 5-2 win against the Cincinnati Reds. It was the first save of the Phillies season but might be an indication the club will role with the longtime reliever to lead the closer committee. Kimbrel was solid in 2022, producing a 3.75 ERA with 22 saves as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers, though he posted a career-low 27.7% strikeout rate and an inflated 1.32 WHIP across 60 innings. So far, he's struggled this year with a 15.43 ERA, a pair of strikeouts, and four walks through 2.1 innings of work. At 34 years old, Kimbrel isn't the same pitcher who earned himself 332 saves from 2011-2018, but he's still a valuable option in every league, with the potential to help in four categories.
