Could Craig Kimbrel Hold Out Until Midseason?
6 years agoThere is a possibility that free-agent closer Craig Kimbrel and his agent, David Meter, consider holding out until after the MLB draft in June. Kimbrel would then shed the draft-pick compensation attached to him after he rejected the Red Sox's one-year, $17.9 million qualifying offer last fall. Contenders might be more interested in giving Kimbrel a prorated one-year deal for around $20 million at that time. There has been little movement for him before Opening Day. The Nationals are unwilling to surpass the competitive-balance tax threshold and the Braves and Phillies are only interested in a shorter contract. The longer Kimbrel goes without being signed this spring, the more his fantasy value drops.
