Corey LaJoie Looks to Redeem Himself After Last Year's Gateway Disappointment
6 months agoCorey LaJoie qualified 15th at Gateway, earning his best oval start this year. He's perhaps eager to prove himself here because his underachievement in the No. 9 Hendrick car in last year's race caused many fans who previously considered him one of the best underdogs in the NASCAR Cup Series to believe that he's always been a bad driver ever since. Carson Hocevar did significantly outrun him in his own car before crashing in last year's race, although it's worth noting that the No. 9 car seemed to be slow relative to the other Hendrick cars even when Chase Elliott was in it, and LaJoie finished 21st last year, just as Elliott had done the year before. LaJoie seems desperate to want to prove his skeptics wrong, but that might cause him to over-drive, like he has done throughout this season.
