5 years agoTexas Rangers starting pitcher Corey Kluber allowed only two hits and an earned run on a solo home run while walking none and striking out nine in six innings pitched in Thursday's intrasquad game. The right-hander threw 53 strikes out of 80 pitches and recorded more than three outs in the fourth and sixth innings to reach his pitch count. The 34-year-old looks like he's ready for a full workload to begin the regular season. He made only seven starts in 2019 with the Indians due to a broken forearm and was dealt to Texas in the offseason. Kluber isn't as bad as he was in 2019 before his injury (5.80 ERA, 1.65) WHIP but he also may no longer be a perennial Cy Young contender. At his current 93 ADP, though, he has some real bounce-back appeal as a low-end SP2.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

1 year agoStarting pitcher Corey Kluber is not sure if he will look to pitch in 2024. Kluber's option wasn't picked up by the Red Sox this offseason. The 37-year-old had a 7.11 FIP, the worst of his career. If he plans on pitching next season, the two-time Cy Young Award winner may have to settle for a minor league pact. Kluber pitched to a 3.54 FIP in 2022 over 31 starts, so if he can get another chance in 2024, he could be a fantasy option in AL or NL-only leagues at best.--Justin Raffone - RotoBaller

1 year agoAs expected, the Boston Red Sox declined their 2024 option on right-hander Corey Kluber (shoulder) on Friday, while third baseman/designated hitter Justin Turner declined his $13.4 million 2024 option. Both players are now free agents. Turner will receive a $6.7 million buyout. Turner is nearing 40 years of age (he's 38), but he didn't lack for production in his lone season in Beantown in 2023, hitting 23 home runs and driving in a career-high 96 runs. Fantasy managers shouldn't be expecting him to match that in 2024, but he will certainly have suitors. Kluber, 37, had a 7.04 ERA and 1.66 WHIP in 55 innings over 15 games (nine starts) in his first and only year in Boston before being shut down for good in mid-September with a shoulder injury. He should be ready for the start of 2024, but the two-time Cy Young winner doesn't appear to have much left and could be ticketed for a full-time relief role wherever he lands.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

2 years agoBoston Red Sox right-hander Corey Kluber (shoulder) won't pitch again this season, according to MLB.com. The 37-year-old was in the middle of a rehab assignment but will instead focus on getting healthy during the offseason from shoulder inflammation that's kept him on the shelf since June 20. Kluber's first season in Boston wasn't pretty, as he sported a 7.04 ERA and 1.64 WHIP with 42 punchouts over 55 innings split between the rotation and bullpen. The former MVP will likely enter 2024 as a free agent, as the Red Sox hold a club option, and he'll look to start fresh elsewhere.--Spencer Seguin

2 years agoBoston Red Sox right-hander Corey Kluber (shoulder), who last pitched in a minor-league rehab outing on July 26, is making progress. Manager Alex Cora said Kluber will throw a bullpen session soon, and the hope is that if all goes well, he will go on another rehab assignment. Cora said on Saturday that the Red Sox hope Kluber can return to pitch again in the big leagues in 2023. The 37-year-old veteran isn't guaranteed to return this year, though, and he should remain on the waiver wire in all fantasy leagues the rest of the way. In 15 appearances (nine starts) for Boston before his injury, he posted a rough 7.04 ERA, 1.64 WHIP, one save and 42 strikeouts in 55 innings pitched.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
