Colson Montgomery Has Three-Hit, Three-RBI Night
Colson Montgomery was 3-for-5 with three RBI for Triple-A Charlotte on Tuesday, tying his season-high in hits and RBI for a single game. The left-handed swinging shortstop is hitting .278 with a homer and four RBI in July to raise his season batting average to .218 with 11 homers and 36 RBI. It hasn't been the best first half of the season at Triple-A for the White Sox' top overall prospect who is sporting a .714 OPS. But Montgomery has the prospect pedigree and once he starts to get hot at Charlotte, he could be looking at a call-up for the rebuilding White Sox. When he does, he has the tools to help out fantasy managers down the stretch.

Colson Montgomery Optioned To Triple-A
Colson Montgomery (back) to Triple-A Charlotte. Montgomery, who is ranked as the No. 39 overall prospect this year per MLB Pipeline, had a real shot to open the 2025 regular season as Chicago's starting shortstop, but a back injury has limited him to just four Cactus League games. The 23-year-old will surely make his major-league debut at some point this year, probably sooner than later, but the rebuilding White Sox aren't going to rush things. The former first-rounder (22nd overall) in 2021 also has only one hit (a homer) and five strikeouts in his nine spring plate appearances. Montgomery could probably use some more seasoning on the farm before his big-league debut, but his power makes him an interesting stash dynasty/keeper leagues. Brooks Baldwin, Jacob Amaya and Chase Meidroth are now competing at the 6 in camp.

Colson Montgomery Still In Contention To Make Opening Day Roster
Colson Montgomery (back) is still in contention to make the Opening Day roster despite the missed time during camp. The infielder was sidelined for 10 days due to a back injury. However, manager Will Venable noted that his injury will not affect his chances of making the roster. Montgomery is considered one of the top prospects in the White Sox system. He was drafted with the 22nd overall selection in the 2021 MLB Draft. The 23-year-old spent the entire 2024 season at the Triple-A level and held a .214/.329/.381 line with 21 doubles and 18 home runs. He swiped eight bags and carried a 69:164 BB:K. He showed progress during the final month of the season as he held a .264/.357/.458 line. If he were to make the roster, he will compete with Brooks Baldwin for an everyday role at shortstop.

Colson Montgomery Returning On Sunday
Colson Montgomery (back) is returning to the starting nine on Sunday to face the Cleveland Guardians. Montgomery will cover shortstop and bat in the six-hole. The top prospect in the Chicago system has been sidelined since the end of February due to back spasms. Given his missed time, fantasy managers should expect him to open the season at the Triple-A level. Last season, the former 22nd overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft spent his entire campaign with Triple-A Charlotte and held a .214/.329/.381 line with 21 doubles and 18 home runs. He struggled to find consistency throughout the season but did begin to turn the corner in September as he posted a .223/.336/.401 line with four long balls. If the team were to send Montgomery to Triple-A at the start of the season, Brooks Baldwin will see most of the starting opportunities at shortstop in the majors.

Colson Montgomery Remains Sidelined
Colson Montgomery (back) remains sidelined and is expected to be re-evaluated following their off day on Tuesday. The 23-year-old is battling back spasms. The former first round pick has not participated in any baseball activities since the injury popped up last week. Fantasy managers should continue monitoring his status during camp, but he may be facing an extended absence. At the start of spring training, Montgomery was expected to compete for the starting shortstop role. However, given this injury, the team may have him open the campaign at the Triple-A. The Southridge HS product spent the entire 2024 season at Triple-A and held a .214/.329/.381 slash line with 21 doubles and 18 home runs. If Montgomery were to open the season at Triple-A, Brooks Baldwin will likely get the starting nod at shortstop on Opening Day.
