1 day agoChicago Cubs right-hander Cody Poteet, who was acquired in the offseason trade with the New York Yankees that involved outfielder Cody Bellinger, is slated to start the team's Cactus League opener on Thursday against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Pitchers Brad Keller, Daniel Palencia, Jack Neely and Brooks Kriske are scheduled to appear in Thursday's game for Chicago. Poteet, 30, appeared in only five games (four starts) for the Yankees in 2024 and allowed seven runs (six earned) on 18 hits (two home runs) while walking eight and striking out 16 in 24 1/3 innings pitched. Barring injuries to other Cubs pitchers, Poteet will likely open the 2025 campaign at Triple-A Iowa. Poteet has a 3.80 ERA and 1.22 WHIP with a 69:35 K:BB in 83 big-league innings over 24 outings (13 starts) in three MLB seasons since debuting with the Marlins in 2021.
