2 days agoColorado Rockies right-handed pitching prospect Chase Dollander will be called up to make his major-league debut on Sunday against the Athletics, according to DNVR's Patrick Lyons. Dollander, the team's top prospect and No. 24 in all of baseball per MLB Pipeline, didn't have to wait long to get the call after narrowly missing out on an Opening Day rotation spot out of spring training. The 23-year-old not only has the skills to stick around all year and be successful, but he'll have a pristine first matchup in his debut against the A's. Dollander was the ninth overall pick in 2023 out of Tennessee and went 6-2 with a 2.59 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 169:47 K:BB in his 23 starts in 2024 for High-A Spokane and Double-A Hartford. He could have four above-average pitches when all is said and done with his fastball, slider, curveball and changeup. Pitchers in Colorado are always a bit scary, but Dollander has the upside to be fantasy relevant in all formats.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

4 days agoColorado Rockies starting pitching prospect Chase Dollander tallied five strikeouts across four innings of work in his Triple-A debut. He allowed six hits, two walks, and one earned run. Dollander was competing for a spot in the starting rotation in Colorado but fell just short in the competition. However, the former ninth overall pick may not need much time in Triple-A if he continues to produce at this level. Last summer, Dollander made his professional debut and progressed quite quickly through the Colorado pipeline. He opened the season at High-A and logged 70 innings to the tune of a 2.83 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP. Then at Double-A, Dollander posted a 2.25 ERA with a 1.10 WHIP across 48 innings. He is worth stashing in all standard formats as he should push for an early MLB debut this season.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller

2 weeks agoColorado Rockies pitching prospect Chase Dollander struck out seven in 3 2/3 scoreless innings in a 3-1 win over the division-rival San Francisco Giants in Cactus League action on Tuesday night, but the ninth overall pick out of Tennessee in 2023 hasn't gone without ups and downs in spring training. He allowed five runs and needed 50 pitches in 1 2/3 innings on March 8 against the Athletics. Colorado views the 23-year-old as a potential future ace, but The Denver Post's Patrick Saunders writes that he's likely to open the year at Triple-A Albuquerque. As it stands now, the Rockies are expected to open the year with a four-man rotation of Kyle Freeland, Ryan Feltner, German Marquez and Antonio Senzatela. Dollander, the team's top prospect per MLB Pipeline, will make his MLB debut in 2025, but it could depend on the health and performance of the veterans already in the rotation.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

2 weeks agoColorado Rockies starting pitching prospect Chase Dollander threw 3 2/3 scoreless innings in Tuesday's 3-1 win over the Giants. The righty allowed two hits and two walks while striking out seven batters. It marks two consecutive outings without giving up a run for the Rockies' No. 1 prospect, although it hasn't all been pretty this spring. Overall, the former first-rounder has allowed nine earned runs on 11 hits and nine walks to go with 18 strikeouts in 14 1/3 innings. The 6-foot-2 hurler still has a chance to earn a rotation spot, but with no experience at Triple-A and some room left to improve, starting the season in Albuquerque may be the smarter long-term move for Colorado. Fantasy managers should monitor the situation, as Dollander could be a viable asset in deeper and NL-only leagues if he were to make the Opening Day roster.--Jarod Rupp - RotoBaller

3 weeks agoColorado Rockies starting pitching prospect Chase Dollander tossed four shutout frames during Thursday's spring training contest. He allowed just two hits, two walks, and struck out three batters. This is a much-needed bounce-back showing for Dollander as he allowed two hits and five earned runs across one 2/3 innings in his previous outing. The top prospect has a chance to make the Opening Day roster and Thursday's outing put him back in the running. Last summer, the Tennessee product made his professional debut and looked quite comfortable. He held a 2.83 ERA with a 1.26 WHIP across 70 innings at High-A. At Double-A, the former ninth-overall pick posted a 2.25 ERA with a 1.10 WHIP and 58 punchouts in 48 innings. If he does make the Opening Day roster, he is worth drafting in the final rounds of all drafts given his elite strikeouts upside he flashed in the minor leagues.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller
