Boston Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy exited in the first period against the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday with a lower-body injury and did not return. The injury occurred after the defenseman received a slash to the top of his right ankle from Canadiens winger Brendan Gallagher. The Bruins rookie has exceeded expectations this season with 32 points and a plus-26 plus/minus through 58 games played. The Bruins conveniently have some depth at defense after acquiring Nick Holden from the New York Rangers before this year’s trade deadline. The Bruins are off Sunday and expect to have an update Monday on McAvoy’s status before they face the Detroit Red Wings at home on Tuesday.--Alex McKenzie
